Riddim – is a Jamaican patois word which, quite simply putting it means “ rhythm” in the English language. A rhythm in music terms is a pattern of sounds and silences.
A producer makes a riddim and has any number of artists and DJs singing/featuring on it. The culture of Jamaican riddims began many decades ago, as far back as the 1950s, where ska music brought about reggae and rocksteady riddims. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, reggae grew, becoming quite popular in the 1980s and took on a side form commonly termed dancehall. Donovan Germain, King Tubby, King Jammy, Scientist, Lee Perry, Linval Thompson, Steely & Clevie, Tony Kelly and many other great reggae dancehall riddim engineers are the fathers of most riddims you listen to today.
